As the data acquisition system uses the GPRS network, would there be any worries of interference/restrictions of use in a factory with other machinery, such as switching off mobile phones in hospitals?

Most of our business is installing systems in factories and industrial areas.  We are immune to external electrical noise.  The frequency, (Radio  Frequencies – a range available to different countries) is ‘licence free’ and is open for domestic and industrial applications.  However, we would check with a hospital before using it there.

There is very little chance that it would cause a problem due to the very low RF power.  The RF Gateway with GSM/GPRS would be located outside any ‘mobile sensitive’ areas.

Does the GPRS network suffer from bad reception? Such as a lack of signal on a mobile phone?

There is always a risk that you cannot get a GSM/GPRS connection but very rare that we cannot get a network provider with a signal.  However, in the future, (3 – 6 months) we will be able to get data to the web via a ‘black box’ that sits on the clients computer network (LAN) utilising their current internet connection.
